Andrews Water Heaters in the third new John Lewis store

07/04/2011

Andrews Water Heaters have supplied two gas-fired condensing water heaters to provide domestic hot water for the John Lewis department store in Cardiff.

Previously, similar models have been used in John Lewis shops at the Trafford Centre in Manchester, Aberdeen and Liverpool. Completed in 2009, the four storey, 26,000sq.m Cardiff branch is Wales's largest department store and John Lewis's biggest shop outside London. It is located adjacent to the new £675m St David's 2 retail development, linked to the original St. David's centre which currently attracts 30 million visitors per year. In addition to washrooms and baby changing facilities, the Andrews water heaters also serve the Espresso coffee bar and Place to Eat public restaurant, as well as the staff restaurant which provides a full meal service to approximately 800 Partners (staff) employed at the Cardiff shop.

The two Andrews SUPAflo water heaters were specified by the original consulting engineers who designed the system, based on the client's satisfaction with units already in service at other locations. However, the project was subsequently taken over by Lateral Technologies Solutions. The units each have an output of 139kW and a recovery rate of 2,382 litres per hour through a temperature rise of 50oC. They were supplied for incorporation in a packaged plantroom which is located on the roof of the store. The plantroom was installed by Crown House Technologies whose Engineer commented, "I am very happy with the water heaters and I found the Andrews Water Heaters Service Department very helpful on one occasion when I had a query."

The SUPAflo mix water cooled burner that fully modulates between 20% and 100% providing ultra low NOx and CO2 emissions and a nett efficiency of 104% at 60/75oC.

In the latest range, there are four types available totalling some 25 models with outputs that range from 57 to 1,002 kW providing hot water recovery rates from 969 to 17,177 litres per hour at a temperature rise of 50ºC from a single unit. All models have a room sealed facility if required and, in addition to the standard equipment supplied also come with a gas filter and condense trap and each has the facility to control and powers its own Bronze UPS primary circulator. The comprehensive control panel indicates all operational and lockout status with full history and may be connected to the onsite Building Energy Management System.
