Baxi Commercial Wins Again!

Baxi Commercial has scooped a second award for its installation of mini-CHP with ground source heat pumps at Notre Dame Primary School in Glasgow, winning the Sustainable Project of the Year category in the HVR Awards 2014.

The aim of the Notre Dame project was to get the best out of GSHP technology and combine it successfully with CHP. To achieve this, five SenerTec mini-CHP units were supplied and commissioned by Baxi Commercial Division as part of the upgrade to help satisfy the electricity requirements of the school buildings while producing impressive energy cost savings and cutting carbon emissions.

David Shaw, business development manager of SenerTec at Baxi Commercial, comments: "We worked alongside Glasgow City Council to ensure the installation was a success and winning this HVR Award is testament to this close relationship.

"A major goal of the Notre Dame project was to create a model of small-scale CHP that could be rolled out across other Council buildings. Through successful installation of the CHP units, the school expects to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by more than 90 tonnes per year. It also expects to reduce running costs by at least £48,200 a year, which includes the anticipated repayments from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.”

Notre Dame came top in a comparison of electrical consumption with 29 other Glasgow City Council schools earlier this year.

Bob McNair, who was Glasgow City Council's lead design engineer for the project, said the Dachs units are "reliable, widely used and so there are no problems with sourcing spare parts and carrying out maintenance”.

He said collaborating with SenerTec on the project had provided very valuable lessons for Glasgow City Council. "Hopefully, as a result, small scale CHP will be used more and more in the council's properties.” he said.

This is the second award win this year for the Notre Dame School project; it also won the Innovation category of the CHPA Awards last month.
